What About the Children?
Child custody is often the most important — and thus, the most highly contested — aspect of a divorce. Everyone cares about their children and wants the best for them.
As an Omaha child custody lawyer with nearly 30 years of experience, I can protect your rights and the best interests of the children as you develop a parenting plan with your spouse. My staff and I share a deep commitment to being available to our clients and keeping the lines of communication open, so you will never be lost in the shuffle with this law firm.
Court Requirements Regarding Child Custody
The Nebraska courts require that every divorcing couple with children:
- Attend parenting classes: Counties within Nebraska offer courses that teach divorcing couples about parenting issues in the context of a divorce, including how to interact with the children and how to establish a parenting plan. In Douglas County, the course is called "What About the Children?"
- Work out a parenting plan: Divorcing couples with children also have to work out a "parenting plan" that details custody and parenting time. Usually this is done with the help of a mediator who will send a copy of the parenting plan to your attorney for review before it is signed.
In your initial consultation with me, I will explain the entire divorce process step by step, including a more detailed look at the court's requirements regarding child custody issues. Throughout the course of your divorce case, I will help you develop a parenting plan and attend any necessary class. I never add fuel to the emotional fire surrounding divorce issues like child custody; my goal is help you through the process as efficiently as possible, so you can move forward with your life.
